Helpful tips on how to organize your closet

No need to wait until Spring to do some cleaning! Get organized now! Here are some helpful tips on how to organize your closet and keep it that way.

De-clutter your clothes by category.

Take all of your clothes out and separate it into categories like pants, dresses, tops, outwear and accessories. Tossing every piece of clothing you own into a massive pile on your bed is overwhelming and inefficient. As you go through each pile, make a commitment to keep only the clothes you know you love and wear most often. Donate the clothes you don’t want anymore to a local shelter.

Empty and clean your closet.

Even though this might seem tedious, giving your closet a proper deep-clean by vacuuming the carpet, wiping down shelves or even painting the inside your favorite color to get rid of scuff marks can help motivate you to organzie your closet and keep it clean over time.

Create a design for your closet space.

If you don’t have the budget for a full-blown closet renovation, get creative and take note of your closet’s best features and use them to your advantage. If possible, use wire shelves like these. Use hanging shoe organizers to store t-shirts and large plastic bins or baskets to put seasonal clothes in like swimsuits or sweaters. If you have too many hanging shelves, think about removing the shelves and hang hooks on your walls instead. The possibilities are endless!

Store your clothes by category.

Remember those categories? Now is the time to hang and place them in your closet so you can easily find them. Keep the items worn most often at eye level. Store all your belts in the same spot, hang your sundresses alongside each other and keep items like your workout gear separate from your office attire. One major space saver is to roll your t-shirts, pajamas and workout clothes into storage boxes, just like Marie Kondo teaches.

Keep your wardrobe color coordinated.

Again, this may be tedious but you will be able to find your clothes and pick out your outfit much faster and easier. Don’t get overwhelmed with this process. Once you’re done, you’ll be surprised on how much space you have. All the more reason to go out and expand that wardrobe!
